I learned of Paula Modersohn-Becker decades ago, writing a piece about Rainier Maria Rilke for the Threepenny Review. Investigating Rilke's Letters on Cézanne they turned out to be bound up with his relationship with, and admiration for, the painter Paula Modersohn-Becker.
